What is Aikido?

OSensei
The Japanese word "Aikido" consists of three characters which can be translated as "the way of harmonizing with the fundamental force of the universe." Aikido is a Budo, or "Martial Way". It has evolved in the historic tradition of Japanese warrior arts. Budo is more than a science of tactics; it is a discipline for strengthening the body, mind and spirit.

Aikido was developed by Morehei Ueshiba, known to Aikido students around the world as O Sensei (Great Teacher). As a young man, Ueshiba was an extraordinary martial artist: a master of sword, staff and spear as well as the art of jujitsu. But O Sensei had a strong spiritual desire as well, and sought a way to integrate non-violence into his martial practices. This eventually led to the development of a new martial art, Aikido.

Todd pins Eric"The secret of Aikido," O Sensei wrote, "is to harmonize with the movement of the universe and bring ourselves into accord with the universe itself." O Sensei maintained that Budo is a work of love, a path to overcome discord and bring peace, "to make the heart of the universe one's own heart." O Sensei also taught that awareness is not only an intellectual pursuit. "This is not mere theory - you must also practice it."

Aikido techniques use movement of the whole body to create motion around a stable, energized center. Some techniques are spectacular, sending a person flying through the air, while others are small movements that immobilize the aggressor. However, each technique is intended to redirect the opponent's energy and movement, rather than fight against it. Through training, students become aware of the tendency to overreact to opposition and learn to remain centered in all conditions.
